Main Role at FJB:
Equally split between database design, web site creation and troubleshooting (hand holding according to one client). I also have a minor training function which goes along with the database design.
Qualifications:
Largely self taught at the University of Curiosity and St. Clair College. I got my first computer (a Sinclair Z-80) in the early 80s, discovered that I liked programming and haven't looked back since.
What do you like most about your work?
I like the constant challenge of working in this field, Everything about it changes so quickly that it's never dull. Working with our various clients is always interesting and I get a real kick out of finding new ways to solve their problems.
Favourite Software Program:
The Semware Editor, a fully programmable text editor. I've been using it in it's various iterations from the time I got my first PC. I've programmed it to speed the markup of web pages and even used it once to convert several hundred email messages into web pages.
Favourite Site:
Trying to pick a favourite website is somewhat like trying to pick up a single grain of sand. Based on frequency of use I'd have to pick all recipes since rarely does a week go by without a visit.
What's on your bookshelf?
The book shelves over the desk are filled with tech manuals, programming books and word books (dictionaries, thesaurus, quotations). The other book shelves around the house are full of history, science fiction, a smattering of philosophy. and a lot of cookbooks.
Community Volunteer Role:
Tommy Douglas once said that if you knew that you had a duty to serve your fellow man then you would always be able to find ways to serve. I've had the good fortune to work with the United Way of Chatham-Kent for the past 13 years and am currently serving as President of the board. I'm also a member of the board of the Chatham-Kent Integrated Children's Services Foundation.
